What type of face peel is right for me?

Let MedPeel help you choose the right face peelHow to Find the Right Peel for Skin Care

When it comes to types of peels, finding the right peel for you boils down to a few factors including skin type, medical history, and problem area you are addressing. Here we’ll discuss how to choose a peel based on your skin type:

Skin peel for fair skin types

For the most part, if you’re fair-skinned, you can tolerate all of the chemicals typically used in chemical peels including AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids), TCAs (trichloroacetic acid), or deep peels using phenol. Not sure what type of peel is right for your fair skin? Here are some of our recommendations:

  • AHA & Vitamin C Brightening Peel - Containing a blend of AHA and Vitamin C this chemical peel will help exfoliate the dead outer layer of cells and
combate fine lines, dullness, and discoloration and is safe for all skin tones including fair skin.

  • TCA Peel - This chemical peel is perfect for those looking for something that will penetrate deeper than an AHA peel. This peel produces noteworthy skin brightening and tightening and will also address deeper wrinkles, sagging skin and texture issues.

  • Jessner Peel - This chemical peel is generally considered a medium level peel containing 14% of each acid (Salicylic, Lactic, and Resorcinol). The depth of this peel is determined by the number of layers applied during application.

Skin peel for dark skin types

In general, people with black or brown skin types should avoid AHAs and use chemical peels that contain beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). The reason is that BHAs are milder than AHAs and are less likely to cause skin discoloration. Some chemicals that are considered safe for darker skin tones are glycolic acid and TCAs. Deep peels should be avoided as scarring and discoloration risk is high.

Not sure what type of peel is right for your dark skin? Here are some of our recommendations:

  • Glycolic Acid Peel - A comprehensive chemical peel that effectively addresses the adverse signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and light hyperpigmentation without visible flaking.

  • Alpha Beta Peel Duo - This chemical peel is a two-step peel that is packed with rejuvenating, powerful, yet gentle exfoliating acids to clear and balance skin.

  • Fusion Peel- This chemical peel offers a proprietary blend of Glycolic, Salicylic, Lactic, TCA, Resorcinol, and Fruit Enzymes Complex. It provides minimal irritation, almost no downtime, and amazing corrective action for all skin types and concerns.

Skin peel for oily/acneic skin types

When dealing with oily skin, you’ll need a chemical peel that can effectively penetrate clogged pores to clear breakouts and prevent more acne. Salicylic acid (SA) and Glycolic Acid are, by far, the most popular.

Not sure what type of peel is right for your oily or acne-prone skin? Here are some of our recommendations:

  • Salicylic Acid Peel - This light strength peel is meant to clear pores and is appropriate for oily and acneic skin types.

  • Glycolic Acid Peel - A comprehensive chemical peel that effectively addresses the adverse signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and light hyperpigmentation without visible flaking.

Skin peel for dry skin types

In general, if you have dry skin, a lactic acid peel can help sooth your skin while exfoliating dead skin cells. Overall, AHAs are preferred over BHAs because they won’t dry out skin.

Not sure what type of peel is right for your dry skin? Here are some of our recommendations:

  • TCA Peel - Trichloroacetic acid penetrates deeper than alpha hydroxy acid which is still ok for dry skin, but TCA is recommended more for those with texture issues that want heavier/visible peeling that the alpha hydroxy acids may not produce.

  • Glycolic Peel- Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid great for dry skin that targets fine lines and hormonal acne issues.

  • AHA Vitamin C Peel - This peel combines mild alpha hydroxy acids with the powerful antioxidant vitamin c to help reduce the appearance of sun and age spots as well as the size of pores.

Skin peel for normal/combination skin types

If your skin is normal or combination, we recommend sticking to chemical peels that contain AHA, TCA, Lactic Acids, and fruit enzymes. These peels will address many concerns of normal and combination skin such as hormonal acne, oily T-zone with dry cheeks, and hyperpigmentation.

Not sure what type of peel is right for your normal/combination skin? Here are some of our recommendations:

  • Fusion Peel- This peel is a cosmetic peel great for starters looking for an overall exfoliation. The Fusion Peel may be layered to increase intensity/results. This peel combines TCA, lactic, glycolic and salicylic acids with fruit enzymes for overall rejuvenation perfect for normal/combination skin.

  • TCA Peel - Trichloroacetic acid is recommended for those looking to tackle texture issues such as deeper wrinkles and scars. These peels will result in heavier peeling that the glycolic and aha peels.

  • Glycolic Peel - Glycolic acid targets fine lines, hormonal acne issues and large pores in normal/combination skin.

  • AHA Vitamin C Peel- These peels combine mild alpha hydroxy acids with the powerful antioxidant vitamin c to help reduce the appearance of sun and age spots as well as the size of pores.
